Abstract
This study investigated the mediating role of socially prescribed perfectionism in the relationship between existential spiritual well-being and smartphone addiction among college students. We collected data from a total of 230 college students, and after excluding 18 participants, we analyzed data from 212 participants who were enrolled in colleges in the Seoul metropolitan area, Gyeongsang province, or Jeolla province. Structural equation modeling was utilized to test the fit of the hypothesized model and to estimate effects of the variables of interest. Results indicated that the existential spiritual well-being of college students showed negative correlations with socially prescribed perfectionism and smartphone addiction. Socially prescribed perfectionism showed a positive correlation with smartphone addiction. Further, socially prescribed perfectionism fully mediated the effect of existential spiritual well-being on smartphone addiction, which indicates that existential spiritual well-being affects smartphone addiction through socially prescribed perfectionism. Intervention and follow-up research for college students' smartphone addiction are discussed.
